Name: Steph Shotorbani, Department of Art & Art History

Internship: Nike Swim in Portland in the summer of 2018

What responsibilities did you have as an intern?

My responsibilities were to be a part of the team and work with swimwear designers, sales people, marketers and print engineers. While there, I worked on graphics and print designs for men's, women's, girl's, and boy's swimwear.

What new skills/knowledge did you gain from your internship?

At my internship, the biggest take away was learning how to work in a professional environment and feel that I could contribute good ideas. After I got over the nerves of whether I thought my ideas were valuable, I was able to contribute to many designs that are in current production, and feel empowered while pitching my ideas to the head of the department.

What connections did you make and how do you think those connections may help you in your career?

The connections I made while working at Nike Swim were invaluable. I learned the more I authentically connect with others, the more I will grow as a designer and as a person. To this day I stay in contact with my coworkers and boss from the internship and hope to continue to do so indefinitely.

What advice would you give other students who are interested in a similar internship?

My advice for anyone who is interested in a similar internship is to stay true to who you are. In a large company, it is easy to feel lost and forgotten. If you stand up for what you think is best, while remaining humble and grateful for the opportunity, you will stand out. I suggest looking inward at how you can grow instead of getting caught up in how to compete with others.

How did your internship compliment your arts education?

I feel that my internship was the most valuable piece of my arts education. It made me feel well equipped to enter the workforce upon graduation and helped me understand what design is like outside of the classroom, as well as who I am as a designer. I am grateful for the opportunity I had and will cherish the experience forever.

Are there other things you would like to tell us?

As I am hiring interns myself, I always look for a well designed resume and an authentic personality. Be your best self, but be yourself!
