Insights from an Intern: Erica MacLean, School of Dance

November 08 2019

This is a series dedicated to highlighting the insights our students gained during their internships.

Name: Erica MacLean, School of Dance

Internship: Photography intern for Beau Pearson at Ballet West in the Spring of 2018

What responsibilities did you have as an intern?

I assisted Beau in setting up commercial lighting equipment and backdrops during studio photo sessions, and acted as a "second shooter" for him during Ballet West rehearsals and concerts.

What new skills/knowledge did you gain from your internship?

The biggest piece of knowledge I gained from this internship was high end retouching techniques for portraits. I entered into this internship with no retouching experience, and left with skills that I still use to this day.

What connections did you make and how do you think those connections may help you in your career?

To be honest, I didn't make connections that I've kept in contact with, especially since I've jumped from dance photography to fashion photography(and live in NYC). I did meet a ton of people along the way though, and I'd probably utilize those contacts if I still were in Salt Lake.

What advice would you give other students who are interested in a similar internship?

I'd say pinpoint exactly who you want to work with, and send them a cold email with samples of your work. I've found that it's more effective to keep it short, sweet, and personal.

How did your internship compliment your arts education?

This might sound super basic, but it did what it was supposed to do. The internship gave me the opportunity to use the skills that I'd acquired in my degree path within a professional environment before I'd graduated. It was very useful because I had a better idea of what to expect within company dance life and photography, which at the time was what I was going for.

Are there other things you would like to tell us?

If there's someone that you really want to work with for your internship, remember that no one is "too good for you." Email anyone and everyone you want! Be fearless! The worst someone can say is no.
