July 23 2020

This is a series dedicated to highlighting the insights our students gained during their internships.

Name: Celina Crane, Department of Film & Media Arts

Internship: Utah Film Center

What responsibilities did you have as an intern?

Assisted the Development and Events Coordinator plan and execute development driven events such as member and festival receptions, such as the "Damn These Heels" LGBTQ Film Festival. Attended weekly pre-festival planning meetings.

What new skills/knowledge did you gain from your internship?

Planning and prepping a film event was an entirely new experience. I learned about fundraising planning and the different departments and responsibilities within a non-profit organization.

What connections did you make and how do you think those connections may help you in your career?

I met a lot of wonderful people who run the Utah Film Center. At the film events, I had the opportunity to meet some directors of the films and chat with members of the film center, most of whom are substantial donors.

What advice would you give other students who are interested in a similar internship?

I advise anyone interested in getting a degree in film to apply for any and all internships, this one included. Honestly, I’m not dreaming to be a film event coordinator, but I think it is a desirable trait to have a wide range of skills relating to the industry which will broaden your knowledge and perspective.

How did your internship compliment your arts education?

Overall, this internship showed me how film events are produced as a way to connect the community and provided an opportunity to work and meet with aficionados of film.
