The Finer Points

This is a series dedicated to highlighting the insights our students gained during their internships.

Name: Samantha Howard, Department of Film & Media Arts

Internship: Impatient Cow Productions

What responsibilities did you have as an intern?

I did animation cleanups and character/scene shading for a local Utah commercial that will be submitted/aired sometime soon! I also was given the opportunity to work as a production assistant for a music video shoot for Calee Reed.

What new skills/knowledge did you gain from your internship?

I've learned a lot about the production process of animating, including a lot of information on animating in Photoshop and working with the video editor on how to work more efficiently. I've also learned some things on client services, and managing deadlines with effective communication. As for the production assistant work, which is something I plan on continuing doing to further build my experiences, as well as because I honestly find it fun, I built some muscles and was inspired to build even more for all the heavy-lifting involved.

What connections did you make and how do you think those connections may help you in your career?

I connected a bit with most of the office, especially those who were working on the same project as me. The other interns were pretty cool, too, and we all have a good agreement on our opinions of dogs (which are awesome to have so many around the office). It helps to know someone in your field to feel understood as well as know now someone has proof you're as hardworking as you put in to be!

What advice would you give other students who are interested in a similar internship?

Heavy-lifting practice is actually really helpful for production, so whatever you can do to get experience in that is good. AfterEffects CC is one of the shiniest tools you can have in your toolbox (as well as most other Adobe Suite applications) so take advantage of the chance the University is offering you to learn as much as you can! Remember internships are also about what you can offer, besides just your potential!

Are there other things you would like to tell us?

Don't be afraid to de-stiffen a little! As someone who tends to be pretty anxious, I understand being reserved seems easy and professional, but know that yourself being yourself is a valued part of the job, too! Fun is part of the job, so allow yourself to have it with the rest of your coworkers!
