Melonie B. Murray is Associate Dean for Faculty & Academic Affairs in the College of Fine Arts. Melonie has served within the School of Dance as the Ballet Program Coordinator and Director of Graduate Studies, and implemented the new (and nation’s only) Master of Fine Arts in Ballet at the U. Prior to her arrival at the University of Utah, Melonie was the Dance Program Director at Colorado Mesa University and has worked extensively in curricular development.

Melonie’s research brings a critical theory lens to the study of ballet. She has presented at academic conferences and written extensively on the commoditization of dancers in advertising campaigns, exploring ballet as a form of cultural identity, and exploring ballet within American higher education. Her publications may be seen in peer-reviewed journals such as Dance Chronicle and Journal of Emerging Dance Scholarship. As a choreographer, Melonie is known for her abilities to expand the boundaries of ballet and to meld choreographic concepts with social messages. Her choreography has been performed internationally and garnered awards. Additionally, she has been commissioned to create choreographic works for Wilder Productions, PGT Productions, The Grand Junction Symphony, Friends University, and Belhaven University.

Melonie holds a BFA in Ballet from Friends University, MFA in Dance from the University of California, Irvine, and PhD in Dance from Texas Woman’s University. She is certified in American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum, has served multiple times as an adjudicator for the American College Dance Association, and is currently serving on the Board of Directors for CORPS de Ballet International. Her performing career included dancing as a Radio City Rockette and as a principal dancer with Wichita Ballet Theatre.
