Spring Dance: a garden of delights

February 15 2022

Kicking off 2022 in the Marriott Center for Dance, the School of Dance presents Spring Dance, showcasing premiere works by faculty artists Cherylyn Lavagnino, Christine McMillan, and Sara Pickett, along with works by guest artists Kevin Thomas and LAJAMARTIN.

“Spring is a time for renewal, awakening, and romance with the world around us and each other and Spring Dance has no shortage of the aforementioned things,” said Brent Schneider, Spring Dance director and professor for the School of Dance.

The show brings together flavors of classical and contemporary ballet, both in and out of pointe shoes, as well as a variety of modern dance styles.

Guest artist Kevin Thomas uses Bach to express the vitality, exuberance, and essential nature of dance. LAJAMARTIN, a dynamic duo that includes Modern Dance alumna Laja Field, brings a gravity defying style that is sure to take your breath away.

Cherylyn Lavagnino’s newest work created on 13 Ballet Majors in the School of Dance offers a triumph of collaboration with colleague Brian Pappal, who composed and recorded an original score for the work.  Christine McMillan collaborated with School of Dance costume designer Christopher Larson to create a dance in which the structure of the costumes at times juxtaposes the dancers’ movements, allowing us to see how structures can both support and evolve. Sara Pickett’s provocative choreography for a quintet explores the dynamics of The Family. To be close is to be in, loved, wanted, known, necessary.  But sometimes a person is not truly seen unless there is a sense of autonomy, of self, of distance.

“Together, the choreographers and dancers have worked safely and diligently toward creating an evening of works that are sure to invite reflection and will also entertain and dazzle you. It will be a wonderful performance, showcasing the amazing talents of choreographers and students alike,” added Schneider.
