The Willam Christensen Collection

In 2011 Willam Christensen’s children, Roxanne Lazzara and Lee Christensen, donated the Willam Christensen Ballet West Archives to the J. Willard Marriott Library.

In celebrating this fine collection, The Friends of the Marriott Library will be hosting a presentation on Jan. 27 at 3:00 pm in the library’s Gould Auditorium (level 1).
Ken Verdoia of KUER will moderate the session and presenters will include: Adam Sklute, Bruce Caldwell, Barbara Hamblin, and Roxanne Lazzara (daughter of Willam Christensen).
This event is free and open to the public.
Additionally, an exhibition of Ballet West materials will be on display in the library’s Special Collections Reading Room (level 4) from Jan. 14 – Mar. 1. Refreshments and a tour of the exhibition will follow the presentation.

Christensen (1902 – 2001) was a noted dancer, teacher, and founder of the San Francisco Ballet Company. He returned to his native Utah and in 1951 founded at the University of Utah one of the first ballet programs at an American university. As faculty was developed and the curriculum grew, the excellence of the program served as the foundation for other university ballet programs.
