Academic Advising in the University of Utah College of Fine Arts:

Academic Advising in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah is divided between advisors in the College and advisors in academic departments. Advising is also available in student services areas. As a student in Fine Arts you will work with your College advisor as well as departmental advisors and faculty advisors.

Definition of Academic Advising at the University of Utah:

Undergraduate academic advising at the University of Utah is a cross-campus, educational process that empowers students to define and attain their academic goals. Advising professionals utilize various forms of communication in safe environments culminating in students understanding the value of higher education and their roles as citizens within local and global communities.

Advisor’s Responsibilities to Students:
Listen attentively to your questions and concerns.
Respect your unique interests, abilities and circumstances.
Help you to explore academic and extra-curricular options that support your personal and career interests.
Explain degree requirements if you have questions about them.
Clarify information about university regulations, policies and procedures as appropriate.
Assist you in developing an appropriate class schedule.
Refer you to appropriate campus resources.
Help you learn how to search out answers for yourself.
Assist you in gaining decision making skills and in assuming responsibility for your education.

Student’s Responsibilities:
Be prepared for advising sessions by bringing appropriate documents (DARS, test scores, transcripts, etc.), making a list of questions and concerns, and planning a tentative class schedule.
Take responsibility for learning and complying with university requirements, policies and procedures.
Honestly communicate your unique interests, values, abilities and circumstances with me.
Take responsibility for achieving your success and accept the consequences of your academic and personal choices.
Keep up with your academic progress and maintain your own advising file. Bring your file to each advising session, and keep all documents until you graduate.
Meet with me regularly, and whenever you have a question or concern.

Learning Outcomes of the Advising Process:
As a result of advising, you should know how to:
Contact your advisor and schedule an appointment.
Prepare for advising sessions.
Generate and understand a Degree Audit Report (DARS) and degree requirements.
Use the Campus Information System to register for classes, check grades, access financial aid and tuition information.
Build a class schedule consistent with your interests, abilities and personal situation.
Access information regarding requirements, deadlines, policies and procedures, and academic options at the University of Utah.
Demonstrate decision making and critical thinking skills by knowing how to gather information, analyzing alternatives, and understanding consequences of choices.
Obtain information about options and resources that can enhance your undergraduate experience (internships, research experiences, volunteer opportunities, etc)
Understand how you can collaborate with students and faculty in other areas of Fine Arts.
