Innovation

Artists have quite often pushed the boundaries of convention to create a statement of their own particular vision. This is especially true when one considers the advances in digital technologies that can be used in the art-making process. Beyond new developments in software devoted to artistic expression, advances in communication technologies have forged an entirely new arena for artists to display and disseminate their work. Many universities can quickly and effectively share live performance and video with other universities around the globe over Internet 2, creating in the process a virtual performance venue as well. The College of Fine Arts is committed to being an active participant in this field. In addition to inter-university collaborations with Internet 2 and Association for , the College is developing; the New Media Wing, a "wired" space for multi-media explorations in art, sculpture, dance, and music; the Center for Interdisciplinary Arts and Technology, to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations; as well as multiple course offerings to earn an Arts Technology certificate or minor. We welcome you to explore the College's engagement with innovation in the Arts.

CIDAT - The Center for Interdisciplinary Arts and Technology

To meet the changing needs of artistic and scientific inquiry, practice and pedagogy, the University of Utahs College of Fine Arts has created the new Center for Interdisciplinary Arts and Technology (CIDAT). Housed in the New Media Wing of the Art and Architecture Building, CIDAT is a meeting place (both literally and figuratively) for faculty and students, and hosts programs, workshops, projects, and creative research. CIDAT fosters creative investigation in the arts and sciences, and provides opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinarity. CIDAT seeks to develop creative researchers; both faculty and student, in all disciplines who can inform contemporary thought and expand the horizons of artistic and scientific inquiry and practice.

CIDAT - The Center for Interdisciplinary Arts and Technology

The Arts Technology Program was conceived as an academic environment that promotes an interdisciplinary ideal in arts computing. It is intended for undergraduate students interested in digital technology as a creative tool and/or alternative medium of creative expression. Through Fine Arts Technology courses students can explore digital technology in the context of the fine and performing arts, then apply the technology to their own creative processes in their own disciplines.
