The purpose of this program is to assist College of Fine Arts undergraduate students in creating and participating in leadership opportunities both on and off campus. This summer we are expanding this program by offering paid internship opportunities for undergraduate students.

The College of Fine Arts Emerging Leaders Internship Program has been created to give undergraduate students the opportunity to help facilitate and contribute to the betterment and proliferation of a strong arts education.

Eligibility & Goals

GOALS OF THE EMERGING LEADERS GRANT PROGRAM

  Any undergraduate student majoring in College of Fine Arts may apply for funding from the College of Fine Arts Emerging Leaders Program for noncredit activities. There are two types of grant funding opportunities available:  
  • Grants for projects that will enhance the student leadership experiences in the arts, priority will be given to projects that can demonstrate how the project will enhance the experiences of a subset of College of Fine Arts students or College of Fine Arts students generally.
  • Grants for opportunities for an individual student to attend leadership conferences, priority will be given to students attending conferences focused on leadership in the arts.

APPROVAL CONSIDERATIONS

Projects must originate and benefit students in the College of Fine Arts and may involve students from other colleges. The committee refers to the following criteria when considering proposals for funding:
  • Quality of the proposed project
  • Completeness and quality of the written proposal
  • Direct and/or long-term benefits to CFA students or a sub-set of CFA students
  • Innovation of proposed project
  • Interdisciplinary activities
  • Number of students involved/impacted
  • Special opportunities
  • University or community arts leadership projects
(Proposals need not address all of the topics listed above, but should address as many as feasible)  

RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF FUNDS

 
  • Monies are not typically awarded for funding parties or other social events.
  • No projects will be funded for which students will receive a grade or university credit as a result of involvement with the proposed project.
  • Student travel will only be considered if the student can demonstrate how the travel will strengthen them as leaders in the arts and benefit the experiences of other art students
  • Funding for student travel (including air, car, bus, metro and all lodging expenses) may be funded at no more than 50%.
  • These funds do not pay for student per diem.
  • These funds may not be used to pay students for their participation in the project.
  • These funds may not be used to pay faculty or staff.

How To Apply
  • Find a Faculty or Staff Mentor: Students are encouraged to find a faculty or staff mentor that can assist them in the creation of a proposal and who are willing to help them with the execution of their project and final report.
 
  • Create a Proposal:The faculty or staff mentor should review all proposals during their development and must sign off on the completed proposal PRIOR to the submission deadline.
   
  • Submit & Proposal Interview: Complete the following Emerging Leaders Grant Application and Proposal according to the instructions and submission information. In order to be considered complete, proposals must contain signatures of both the student and the faculty or staff mentor, and must be submitted to the College Office before the monthly deadline. Late proposals will not be considered. Subsequent to submitting the proposal, students will be required to set up an interview with Assistant Dean Leckie to discuss their Emerging Leaders Grant proposal and process, and answer questions that the Emerging Leaders Grant Committee may have had in their review of the grant. These meeting will take place within a week of the proposals submission.
   
  • Final Project Report: Student Clubs have the responsibility of submitting a Final Project Report two weeks following completion of the project/event or by June 30, 2013, whichever comes first. Project reports are to be delivered to the Dean’s Office in College of Fine Arts (250 ART). (See more information below.)
 
  • COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP - The ELP Funding Committee is constituted of members of the College of Fine Arts faculty and staff. The Committee is chaired by the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Affairs, Liz Leckie.

Emerging Leaders Grant Deadlines
Emerging Leaders Grants are accepted year round and due the first Monday of each month by 5pm. (If Monday is a holiday, grants will be accepted on Tuesday.) Funding will only be granted for future projects and conference attendance. Retroactive grant funding is not provided. The 2012-2013 academic year Emerging Leaders Grants deadlines are:
  • September 4, October 1, November 5, December 3
  • January 7, February 4, March 4, April 1, May 6, June 3

Submission
Please follow the format of the application form and be sure that all aspects of the application are addressed. Incomplete applications will not be considered.   Please submit your Emerging Leaders Grant signed application, proposal and budget to Liz Leckie, Assistant Dean, in ART 250.

Funded Proposals
FUNDED PROPOSALS

Requirements for Funded Proposals

Award notifications will be sent within one week after grant proposal interview. If funding is granted and accepted, the student agrees to the following terms and conditions:
  • Include the line “This event is supported in part by College of Fine Arts Emerging Leaders Program” in all of your project materials.
  • The student awarded funds will submit a final report (as described below) no later than two weeks after the event is completed. Please be aware if we do not receive your final report by two weeks after your event is complete you will not be considered for future funding and will not receive your final reimbursement.
  • All funds are to be used only as budgeted and described in the original proposal. In extreme circumstances, a budget may need to be revised. Revisions to a proposed budget must be approved in advance by the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Affairs and cannot exceed the original funded amount. Any funds that are not spent as requested are returned to the College for redistribution and any monies spent beyond what has been awarded will not be reimbursed, and become the responsibility of the student.
  • Before you start your project, speak with Assistant Dean Leckie about how to access the grant funds and receive reimbursements.
  • Check your Umail mailbox regularly. All official communications with the College of Fine Arts will be via email. You are responsible to check your email for requests for information and deadlines.
 

GUIDELINES FOR FINAL REPORT

Students who have been awarded an Emerging Leaders Grant have the responsibility of submitting a Final Project Report two weeks following completion of the project/event or by June 30, 2013, whichever comes first. Project reports are to be delivered to the Dean’s Office in College of Fine Arts (250 ART). Any student that fails to file a final report by the deadline will not be eligible for future funding or final reimbursement of their project.
  • A written report addressing all of the following items: a) How the project benefited the student; b) How the project benefited College of Fine Arts students or the addressed subset of College of Fine Arts students; and c) Enumerate educational benefits provided by the activity
  • Documentation of leadership benefits and the impact of the project on current College of Fine Arts students
  • An itemized fiscal report of the project expenses. This will include a brief description of the charges (e.g. cost of postcards, cost of mailing, rental space charge, etc.)
  • A supporting report from your department business manager verifying the disbursement of funds
