Linda F. Smith
The College of Fine Arts is happy to welcome Professor Linda F. Smith to the Ballet Department, where she will serve as Acting Chair of the Department.
As many of you are aware, Distinguished Professor Emerita Bené Arnold has served as Interim Chair for the past three years. The College conducted a national search for a new chairperson last year and was hopeful that the process would bring a new leader for the Department to campus this term. With the advent of a new Chairperson, Professor Arnold returned to retirement. Unfortunately, at the last moment, that search did not come to fruition and the week before classes began the University was in the position of engaging a leader for the Department.
Senior Vice President David Pershing appointed Professor Smith to a two-year position as Acting Chair. Professor Smith has directed and developed the College of Law Clinical Program over the past two decades, receiving the University of Utah Distinguished Service Award in 2006 in recognition of this work. Additionally, she has served the University of Utah as past President of the Academic Senate as well as on numerous committees across the University. As Acting Chair for the Ballet Department Professor Smith will guide the Department through the fiscal day-to-day operations and help the Department meet the ever-changing demands of University policies and procedures. Classes, guest artists and performances will continue as usual; Ballet majors will notice very little change, if any, in the regular program of study.
Professor Smith has made time available to meet with students and faculty in the Department of Ballet and is happy to address concerns or ideas that you may have. She looks forward to meeting with the SAC Representatives to gain a student perspective of the Department as well as with the faculty and other administrators on campus. The College of Fine Arts remains committed to quality education and experiences for all students in the College. We plan on searching for a new Chairperson for the Ballet Department at the conclusion of Acting Chair Linda Smith’s two-year appointment.
